I wonder if there is any connection between Nike's Recycling shoe campaign and what is happening in these photos. Nike has a program in which they encourage colleges, secondary schools, public groups, etc., to run campaigns to collect recycled sneakers which are then used to make gym floors, outdoor playground platforms, etc. There has been such a big response from groups to this campaign that Nike no longer is able to accept all the sneakers. I have wondered if all these sneakers are actually used for the stated purpose. I'd like to see a formal response from Nike about this.

Dear Jim:

I ran across the article in the LAT's which led me to your website. Congratulations on your excellent work. I have always wondered why companies like Nike don't just up the price of the product a few dollars to increase wages. I found Nike's non-response on the article typical and disturbing.

My daughter plays field hockey at St. Michael's college in Vermont. She is going to be purchasing some Nike gear the team has already chosen. I am not sure if you ever get up to the Burlington area, but I am sure the school would be very interested in hearing what you have to say. It would be nice if there was another maker of sports gear that treated its workers ethically.

I have been to Cambodia and their wages are even worse. I think most Americans have no idea how little they pay for even expensive clothes goes to pay wages. Maybe many would not care, however, I think consumers are becoming more aware of the slave labor issues abroad.

Good luck in your continued efforts.

Best,

Scott

Jim,
Have you heard any further from Nike (Specifically Ms. Morris?) following her visit there? Has she been "silenced" within her company, or do you think she is capable of creating some change from within?

Nike could easily pay their workers a living wage (approximately double what they are now paid) and still remain at the top of their industry. They made more than $19,000,000,000.00 in revenues in FY2009. As for objective data on wages, check out http://www.asiafloorwage.org/.

What would be ideal for you? whats your idea for the best possible solution? Do you want nike to pull out of Indonesia, dramatically increase wages? Im just curious to know and i was wondering if your could provide some data to me in wich you could identify an ideal wage situation for the people in indonesia and still make it possible for nike to remain at the top of their industry. In the end i do agree we need to help the poor people in indonesia and think their wages are cruel, but at the same time im torn because I understand that nike is a corporation who needs to remain at the top. Is it possible for both to coexsist?

PS im not saying i disagree, in fact im a big follower of you, im just playing devils advocate and realizing the world is not a perfect place and that however much protesting we do, Nike will still refuse to do anything if they cant remain profitable-and very much so.

I think the following can best explain the spending power of a Nike worker in Indonesia in 2009 as compared to US dollars.

Nike's workers currently make Rp1,000,050 per month (about $100).

Here is a break out of major monthly expenses:

Housing Rp300,000
Transportation (not covered by the factory) Rp100,000
Drinking water Rp100,000

This leaves Rp500,050 or roughly Rp17,000 for the rest of the month for food, clothes, and anything else a worker might need.

Let's use the cost of a pair of Nike sneakers as a measurement. In the mall in Jakarta a middle of the road pair of Nike running sneakers costs about Rp450,000. This is almost 1/2 of a workers monthly salary.

If you had a job in the USA and you made about $3,000 a month after taxes and we transferred the spending power of a Nike factory worker to your situation, that same pair of Nike sneakers would cost you about $1,400.

Does that help explain better how little spending power a Nike factory worker has? I know this is not exactly what you asked, but I made an assumption that the explanation above was what you were looking for when you asked your question. If I was incorrect, let me know.

Peace, Jim Keady
